Jeremy Siskind | Hal Leonard Jeremy Siskind Pianist Jeremy Siskind is the winner of the 2012 Nottingham International Jazz Piano Competition and the second-place winner of the 2011 Montreux Solo Piano Competition. A two-time finalist for the American Pianist Association’s Cole Porter Fellowship, Siskind has performed jazz and classical music at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, in Japan, Switzerland, Thailand, Cyprus, England, Lebanon, India, Tunisia, France, and China. Siskind began serving full-time on the keyboard faculty of Fullerton College in Southern California in 2017 after teaching at Western Michigan University for five years. Siskind is also a leader of the house concert movement, having performed in over 100 houses in 24 different states around the U.S. A proud Yamaha Artist since 2013, Siskind holds degrees from the Eastman School of Music (Jazz Performance and Music Theory) and Columbia University (English and Comparative Literature). Vicki Courtney | Hal Leonard Vicki Courtney Vicki Tucker Courtney was born to play the piano. While the other four-year-olds in her Dallas neighborhood were learning to ride their tricycles, Vicki was taking piano lessons. Vicki's first piano teacher regularly entered her in the Van Katwijk Piano Contests. It was this early exposure to the world of competitive piano that led to an opportunity to study under Paul van Katwijk, himself, a successful composer and the conductor of the Dallas Symphony. While in high school, Vicki's education in musical theory and improvisation opened up new possibilities. With confidence and determination, Vicki embarked on a journey to develop herself as a composer and arranger. No one worked harder than Vicki as she played for every chorus and choral production the school offered, sometimes performing her own compositions and arrangements. Immediately after high school, Vicki was hired as Director of Music for the Youth and Children's Choirs at a local church while studying Piano Performance at North Texas University. Regrettably, the call of corporate America lured Vicki away from her musical pursuits. Many years went by until she was asked to perform at a memorial concert for a previous mentor, which lead Vicki back to her roots in music and her God-given talent. It was time to return to the piano and share with others the joy and healing that beautiful music can affect. Vicki was able to regain the skills and abilities needed to attain a professional church staff position. In 2002, Vicki was apprenticing with Mark Hayes, renowned for sacred and secular choral music and piano arrangements. Thomas May | Hal Leonard Thomas May Thomas May (b. 1976) began his appreciation for music with piano lessons at age six. Mr. May went on to study piano with a myriad of inspirational teachers and graduated summa cum laude from UW-Whitewater in 2000, where he received his undergraduate degree in Instrumental Music Education. Mr. May also received a Master of Instrumental Music Education degree at VanderCook College of Music in 2004. Mr. May started his career by teaching middle school band and general music at Nikolay Middle School in Cambridge, Wisconsin. Soon after, Mr. May became the 4th and 5th grade orchestra and band director in the Delavan-Darien School District. During that time, Mr. May took an interest in composing and arranging music that meets the unique needs of students at this early level of musicianship. Mr. May currently teaches orchestra and band at Marshall Middle School in his hometown of Janesville, Wisconsin. Mr. May continues to enjoy creating music for his students and finds the work of helping young people through the many challenges of playing an instrument to be very rewarding. Mr. May is a member of ASCAP and is an adjudicator and accompanist for various music festivals. Mr. May also remains active as a pianist and instrumental musician in his church. In addition to a variety of outdoor activities, Mr. May especially enjoys spending time with his wife Jessica who is an elementary music teacher, and their four children. Ken Medema | Hal Leonard Ken Medema Ken Medema has been writing and performing his own songs since 1970 when he began composing original material for his work as a music therapist in a psychiatric hospital. He is now involved in a full-time performance schedule that has taken him worldwide. Singing in every venue imaginable for 50 - 50,000 people, from churches to conventions to colleges to corporations, Ken has always custom designed an event for every occasion. Using his gift of improvisation, Ken hears with his heart, stories from people or themes from events or speeches and sings the stories back to audiences of all ages. Rodney Miller | Hal Leonard Rodney Miller After graduating from Lebanon Valley College in 1977, Rodney Miller spent 17 years teaching in Lebanon School District, where he taught strings in grades 3 through 12. Miller also directed the middle school jazz band. For the last seven years before his death in 2005, he was the elementary instrumental music instructor. Miller was a recipient of the Lebanon Valley College’s Creative Achievement Award in 2003. Two years later, he was posthumously awarded the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) District 7 Distinguished Service Award, and at the same time the PMEA changed the name of this award to the Rodney S. Miller Distinguished Service Award. For the Lebanon School District, Miller ran the instrumental summer lessons program and initiated a scholarship program for students who could not afford to pay for summer lessons. He was also actively involved with the Cedar Foundation, an organization that helped to get instruments to students who could not afford them in the Lebanon School District. Miller was a six-time ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) Standard Award winner. He had over 40 instrumental and choral works published by music publishing houses, including Shawnee Press, Alfred Music, Warner Bros., TRN Music, Educational Programs Publications, Brixton Publications and Kagarice Brass Editions. Miller did graduate work at VanderCook College in Chicago, The Hartt School of the University of Hartford, West Chester University, and the Philadelphia College of Performing Arts. He arranged and performed with the Dave Stahl Sacred Orchestra. For over 20 years, Miller was co-musical director/arranger for the Timbers Dinner Theatre in Mount Gretna, where he lived. Laura Farnell | Hal Leonard Laura Farnell Laura Farnell (b. 1975) is an active choral composer, clinician, accompanist, and adjudicator who resides in Arlington, Texas. After graduating summa cum laude from Baylor University with her Bachelor of Music Education in Choral Music (with a piano emphasis) in 1998, Laura taught elementary music in Mansfield, Texas for two years. She then taught for eight years at Boles Junior High in Arlington ISD, during which time the choir program earned numerous UIL sweepstakes awards. In 2004 she received an Excellence in Education Award as the Arlington Independent School District's outstanding junior high teacher of the year. Laura especially enjoys working with middle school students, as well as composing and arranging for this age group, and she is represented by several music publishing companies. She is a member of the Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Choral Directors Association, and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. Richard Peaslee | Hal Leonard Richard Peaslee Richard Peaslee was born in New York City and received his undergraduate degree in Music Composition from Yale University, graduating Phi Beta Kappa. After serving two years in the U.S. Army, he received both a diploma and a Master of Science degree from The Juilliard School, in addition to studying privately with Nadia Boulanger in Paris and William Russo in New York and London. Peaslee has served on the faculty of the Lincoln Center Institute and New York University’s Music Theatre Program and is a former board member of The American Composers Orchestra and Jobs For Youth. He serves on the board of American Opera Projects and SCAN New York. A retrospective on his career was presented by Lincoln Center’s Composers’ Showcase at Alice Tully Hall. His concert works have been widely performed by orchestras, chamber ensembles, and soloists, most notably the Philadelphia, Detroit, Milwaukee, Indianapolis, and Buffalo Symphony Orchestras. His concerto for trombone, Arrows of Time, was premiered by the Seattle Symphony. Awards include The American Academy of Arts and Letters Marc Blitzstein Award; Obie and Villager Awards; as well as NEA and NYFA Fellowships. Dave & Jean Perry | Hal Leonard Dave & Jean Perry Dave and Jean Perry have been writing and publishing their songs for schools and churches for nearly 30 years. Their music has been performed by choirs in Europe, Asia, Africa, South America, North America and Australia. They have over 250 songs in print and are recipients of special composer awards from ASCAP. Dave received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from Baker University and his Masters in Choral Music Education from Arizona State University. After spending 28 years as a high school choral director, he retired in order to devote more time to writing music. During his years as a choral music educator, he also taught musical theater, music theory, guitar and humanities. Dave also has 20 years of experience directing church youth choirs and five years experience as a director of a community college choir. He enjoys guest directing honor choirs and presenting workshops and interest sessions to high school choral directors. Dave is a recipient of the “Excellence in Teaching” award from the Arizona Music Educators Association. In the year 2000, he was selected as the “Arizona Music Educator of the Year” and also received the “Lifetime Recognition Award” from the Choral Directors of Arizona. In 2009, Dave received the “William E. Richardson Retired Music Educator Service Award” from the Arizona Music Educators Association. Jean began her music education studies at Baker University and completed her degree in Choral Music Education at Arizona State University. She spent 17 years as a junior high choral director and eight years as an elementary general music specialist and choir director before retiring in 2002. Jean now devotes a majority of her time to writing and composing. She travels throughout the United States working with choirs in clinic situations, presenting interest sessions to fellow teachers and directs regional honor choirs and Elementary and Junior High All-States. Honors received include the “Excellence in Teaching” award from the Arizona Music Educators Association, the “Teacher of the Month” award from Mesa Public Schools, the “Outstanding Choral Educator Award” for 2001 from the Arizona chapter of the American Choral Directors Association, the “Arizona Music Educator of the Year” for 2002, and the “Lifetime Recognition Award” from the Choral Directors of Arizona in 2004. Rick Kirby | Hal Leonard Rick Kirby Rick Kirby Rick Kirby was born in Boston in 1945 and was educated in the New England area. After arriving in Wisconsin in 1974, he taught at several high schools and universities. He retired from public school teaching in 2001 to pursue a full time career as a composer and arranger. Before retirement, Mr. Kirby's last public school teaching position was at Waukesha West High School. Mr. Kirby has arranged or composed for many marching bands, including groups from Wisconsin, Illinois, Kansas, Ohio, Arizona, and California. He is presently the staff arranger for the award winning Sound of Sun Prairie Marching Band and the Wisconsin State Champion Waukesha West High School Marching Band. Mr. Kirby has also been involved in many commissioning projects for concert bands, jazz ensembles, chorus, and other ensembles. His music is published by Daehn Publications, Hal Leonard, and Arrangers' Publishing Company. He presently directs the Waukesha Area Symphonic Band and the Carroll College Jazz Ensemble. He is also the associate conductor of the Youth Wind Orchestra of Wisconsin. Kirby is the Wisconsin Music Educators Association's 2002 recipient of the Distinguished Service Award. This award is given to a music educator for lifelong meritorious service, excellence, and dedication to music education in Wisconsin. He is also the Phi Beta Mu (Wisconsin chapter) Outstanding Band Director for 2007. Cristi Cary Miller | Hal Leonard Cristi Cary Miller Cristi Miller is highly regarded across the United States as a master teacher, conductor and composer. After graduating from Oklahoma State University, she began her teaching career instructing grades 7-12. She eventually moved to the Putnam City School system in 1989 where she worked in the elementary classroom for 21 years. During her time at Putnam City, she was the co-director of the Putnam City Honor Choir. This chorus was highly regarded in their area, winning many honors at festivals and competitions. In 2008, Cristi became a National Board Certified Teacher and in 2010, Mrs. Miller became a part of the Fine Arts Staff at Heritage Hall Schools in the Oklahoma City area where she teaches middle school music. Many of her students have received All-State honors through her leadership and her choirs have maintained superior ratings at statewide contests. Mrs. Miller’s honors include Putnam City Teacher of the Year, Putnam City “Excellent Educator” Award, Putnam City PTA Teacher of the Year and OMEA Exemplary Teacher. In addition, in 2014 she will be inducted into the OMEA Hall of Fame. Cristi has served as the Elementary Representative on the Oklahoma Choral Directors Association Board of Directors as well as the Elementary Vice President and President for the Oklahoma Music Educators Association. Along with her educational responsibilities, Mrs. Miller authors and co-authors a column for a national music magazine entitled Music Express! and was a contributing writer for the Macmillan McGraw-Hill music textbook series, Spotlight on Music. In addition, she served as the consulting editor for Little Schoolhouse book series, Christopher Kazoo and Bongo Boo. Mrs. Miller is frequently in demand as a clinician and director across the United States and Canada. She has numerous choral pieces and books in publication through the Hal Leonard Corporation and has also been the recipient of several ASCAP awards for her music. Matt Conaway | Hal Leonard Matt Conaway Matt Conaway Matt Conaway (b. 1979) was appointed to the Purdue University faculty in August 2012 as an Assistant Professor of Bands. He serves as an associate director of the famed "All-American" Marching Band and basketball pep bands, and directs the University Concert Band and Varsity Band. He is also the faculty supervisor for the band's various auxiliary units, serves as the department's technical coordinator, and coordinates the annual Band Day event. Prior to this appointment, Mr. Conaway served for ten years as the Director of Bands for the West Lafayette Community School Corporation, during which time the program received many state and national accolades for msuical excellence. He brought the Marching "red Devil" Band, basketball pep band, jazz band, and symphony orchestra back to he music department, and raised band program enrollment by over 200 sutdents in grades 5-12. During his tenure, West Lafayette became regarded as one of the great small-school music programs in Indian, with two state concert finals appearances and dozens of superior festival ratings. The NAMM Foundation recognized the West Lafayette Community School Corporation as one of the "Best Communities for Music Education in America" in 2006, 2010, 2011, and 2012. His arrangements have been heard internationally at multiple bowl games, basketball tournaments, and major sporting events since 1999. After graduating from Woodhaven (MI) High School in 1997, Mr. Conaway attended Indiana University – Bloomington, where he studied arranging with David Woodley. He received his Bachelor of Music Education with Distinction in 2001, and earned a Masters of Music degree from the American Band College of Sam Houston State University in 2010. He is a member of NAFME, CBDNA, NBA, ASTA, Indiana Music Educators Association, Indiana Bandmasters Association, and ASCAP. He is an honorary member of Tau Beta Sigma and Kappa Kappa Psi, and was recently inducted into the Gamma chapter of Phi Beta Mu. Steve Smith | Hal Leonard Steve Smith For twelve years, Steve Smith taught middle school band in the Lewisville Independent School District, a northern suburb of the Dallas/Ft. Worth area in Texas. For eight of those years he served as the Director of Bands at Downing Middle School in Flower Mound. At Downing, Mr. Smith taught the Symphonic Band, assisted with the Concert Band and taught all of the beginning woodwind classes. The bands at Downing consistently displayed a high standard for musical excellence highlighted by a performance at the 2005 Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago. In 2012, Steve joined the team at Hal Leonard as an Instrumental Editor. At Hal Leonard, he works with the production of instrumental music and educational materials for band and strings. Steve brings his recent teaching experience to Hal Leonard and is using this in the development of the new Essential Elements Interactive website designed to assist teachers and students at the beginning instrumental level. In 2010, Mr. Smith’s composition Capilano Fanfare was selected in the Dallas Wind Symphony’s Call for Fanfares and received a performance as the opening fanfare for the 2010-2011 concert season. In 2007, Mr. Smith was honored as a “Distinguished Music Educator” by the Yale University School of Music, in conjunction with an international symposium promoting music in the public schools. Steve earned his Bachelor of Music Degree from the University of North Texas in 1998 and his Master’s degree from UNT in 2012. While at North Texas, he studied saxophone under Dr. Eric Nestler and performed in the North Texas Wind Symphony under the direction of Mr. Eugene Migliaro Corporon. Mr. Smith has was also involved in the drum and bugle corps activity for over twelve years. After performing with and teaching the brass section for the Madison Scouts, Mr. Smith worked with the Southwind Drum and Bugle Corps from Lexington, Kentucky and with the Santa Clara Vanguard from Santa Clara, California. For 8 years, worked with Specialized Administrative Services Inc., providing leadership training for high school band students across the state of Texas. Mr. Smith is an active member of the TMEA and NAfME. Prior to moving to Wisconsin to join Hal Leonard, his wife, Jenny, was an elementary art teacher and is now a freelance artist in the Milwaukee area. On the show, teen idol Link Larkin pledges his love to Amber Von Tussle by giving her his Council Member ring, and Corny Collins announces auditions for new Council Members. Seeing her chance at stardom, Tracy plans to cut school and audition for the show, but her mother Edna Turnblad does not approve. Elsewhere, Penny and Amber also argue with their mothers (Mama I'm a Big Girl Now). Tracy goes to the audition, but is ridiculed by the girls on the show and sent away by Amber's mother and show producer, Velma Von Tussle. Sitting in detention, a frustrated Tracy learns some new dance moves from Seaweed J Stubbs, a black student whose mother is Motormouth Maybelle - the DJ who hosts the monthly Negro Day on "The Corny Collins Show." The kids hatch a plan to get Tracy on the nationwide Miss Teenage Hairspray broadcast, and bring the news to Motormouth, who expresses that she will never stop fighting for equality (I Know Where I've Been). On the first day of class, Elle meets her fellow first-year law classmates, Aaron, Padamadan and Enid, as well as Warner, who is shocked to see her on campus. Callahan (the most feared teacher at Harvard) kicks Elle out of class for being unprepared at the suggestion of classmate Vivienne Kensington. Callahan's TA, Emmett, tries to console Elle, but her mood only worsens when Warner confesses to Elle that Vivienne is his new girlfriend. Back at Harvard, Warner and Vivienne win two of Callahan's coveted internship positions, and Warner proposes to Vivienne on the spot right in front of Elle. Before her heart can break, Emmett shows her the internship list, and Elle is ecstatic to discover her name is on it as well ("So Much Better"). The interns quickly jump into the case of fitness video guru Brooke Wyndham, who is accused of killing her wealthy husband. After watching her fitness video ("Whipped into Shape"), the interns meet her at a correctional facility where she refuses to give her alibi to anyone but Elle, thanks to their Delta Nu sisterhood ("Delta Nu Nu Nu"). In confidence, Brooke shares with Elle that she was getting liposuction the day her husband was killed, so there is no way she could be guilty, but no one can know because her fitness empire would be destroyed. The other interns demand that Elle give up Brooke's alibi, but Elle refuses to go against her Delta Nu pledge. Back at the salon, Paulette has eyes for the UPS delivery man, Kyle, but isn't confident enough to go after him. Elle teaches her a guaranteed move to win any guy's affections - the Bend and Snap ("Bend and Snap"), but when Paulette tries it, she accidentally breaks Kyle's nose. Elle returns to the case, but Callahan has a different agenda and tries to kiss her, just as Vivienne returns, unnoticed. Elle rejects Callahan's advances and is fired. Defeated, she prepares to go home convinced she was only ever seen as a joke, even though Emmett asks her to stay, finally realizing that he is in love with her ("Legally Blonde"). Elle stops by the salon to say goodbye to Paulette, but Vivienne - who witnessed what happened to Elle in Callahan's office and finally understands her - convinces her to keep fighting. Linda Spevacek | Hal Leonard Linda Spevacek Over the past two decades, Linda Spevacek has become one of the most successful composers in modern choral music. She has sold more than 7 million copies of over 700 published compositions and arrangements. Linda has continued to keep her compositions original and creative while maintaining the consistency and integrity that has given her a world-renowned reputation. Dynamic, inspiring, creative and expressive are just a few words that describe the level of excellence found in every Linda Spevacek composition, arrangement, seminar and reading session. In addition, singers from all over the world performed her arrangements twice on the nationally televised MENC World's Largest Concert on PBS. Several of her works have been premiered at annual conventions of the American Choral Directors Association, the Music Educators National Conference and on the Hour of Power at the Crystal Cathedral. Linda was a featured conductor at Carnegie Hall in New York in 1999. Her work has won repeated awards from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) in recognition of her outstanding achievements and success. She has composed commissions for many large massed groups around the country (many of these compositions have become signature pieces for the choirs). In addition to membership in ASCAP, Linda is a member of The American Choral Director's Association (ACDA), The Music Educators National Convention (MENC), the National Teachers of Singing (NATS), and Sigma Alpha Iota (SAI), a professional sorority of women musicians. In addition to her published titles, she has authored seven choral collections, five piano books and six vocal collections. Linda's energy and devotion to working with singers at all levels have resulted in numerous invitations as guest conductor for various national, state, regional and choir, church, and school honor festivals. Linda's schedule includes conducting, judging and teaching across the United States and Canada. Linda has an education degree from the University of Wisconsin in Madison with her primary emphasis on voice, piano and theory. She has since worked extensively with elementary, junior and senior high school choirs, community choirs consisting of youth, high school, college and adult levels as well as church choirs of all sizes and denominations. Linda is one of the most sought after judges, workshop and reading session clinicians in the country. Her dynamic clinic presentations include a variety of topics from vocal technique, creative programming, teaching musical sensitivity through literature, success with the non-singer, recruiting and teaching males, editing accompaniments, composing a mini-opera, creative workshops combining youth/adult choirs, working and recruiting the male singer and a motivational/inspirational sessions. John Williams | Hal Leonard John Williams In a career spanning more than six decades, John Williams has become one of America’s most accomplished and successful composers for film and for the concert stage, and he remains one of our nation’s most distinguished and contributive musical voices. He has composed the music and served as music director for more than one hundred films, including all nine Star Wars films, the first three Harry Potter films, Superman, JFK, Born on the Fourth of July, Memoirs of a Geisha, Far and Away, The Accidental Tourist, Home Alone and The Book Thief. His nearly 50-year artistic partnership with director Steven Spielberg has resulted in many of Hollywood’s most acclaimed and successful films, including Schindler’s List, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, Jaws, Jurassic Park, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the Indiana Jones films, Munich, Saving Private Ryan, The Adventures of Tintin, War Horse, Lincoln, The BFG and The Post. His contributions to television music include scores for more than 200 television films for the groundbreaking, early anthology series Alcoa Theatre, Kraft Television Theatre, Chrysler Theatre and Playhouse 90, as well as themes for NBC Nightly News (“The Mission”), NBC’s Meet the Press, and the PBS arts showcase Great Performances. In January 1980, Mr. Williams was named nineteenth music director of the Boston Pops Orchestra, succeeding the legendary Arthur Fiedler. He currently holds the title of Boston Pops Laureate Conductor which he assumed following his retirement in December 1993 after fourteen highly successful seasons. He also holds the title of Artist-in-Residence at Tanglewood. Mr. Williams has composed numerous works for the concert stage, among them two symphonies, and concertos commissioned by several of the world’s leading orchestras, including a cello concerto for the Boston Symphony Orchestra, a bassoon concerto for the New York Philharmonic, a trumpet concerto for The Cleveland Orchestra, and a horn concerto for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. This gift has been sent by a friend to help Doctor Dolittle raise funds for his quest. He takes the Pushmi- Pullyu to ALBERT BLOSSOM of Blossom's Mammoth Circus (I've Never Seen Anything Like It - Part 1) and makes a deal to present the unique animal for a limited four-week engagement (I've Never Seen Anything Like It - Part 2) with an even split of the profits. Doctor Dolittle earns enough money from the circus to go on his journey, but makes good on a promise to help SOPHIE the seal escape the circus and reunite with her husband. This act of friendship lands Doctor Dolittle in court. Though he proves that he was only helping the seal, and that he can indeed talk to animals, the doctor is committed to an asylum by the magistrate, General Bellowes. Doctor Dolittle protests (Like Animals), but is sent away, leaving Polynesia and Madeline to plan a rescue. Having escaped from the authorities, Doctor Dolittle "borrows" a boat owned by General Bellowes to set off on his quest to find the Great Pink Sea Snail. Emma is discovered on board and she questions the doctor's navigational strategy (Fabulous Places). They set off for Sea Star Island and, after encountering a storm at sea, end up shipwrecked in the very place they were looking for. There the travelers discover STRAIGHT ARROW, the friend who sent the Pushmi-Pullyu to Doctor Dolittle. Straight Arrow explains that Sea Star Island is an animal sanctuary (Save the Animals). Doctor Dolittle's dream finally comes true with the arrival of the Great Pink Sea Snail to the island. They converse in Escargot and the Snail agrees to take the doctor's friends back home. Doctor Dolittle explains that he will not be returning to Puddleby and the friends share a tearful goodbye before departing in the Snail. Back home, Emma tries to talk some sense into her uncle with the help of the animals (The Voice of Protest). It works and Bellowes declares Doctor Dolittle innocent of any wrongdoing. The cheers of the crowd are interrupted by the triumphant return of Doctor Dolittle to Puddleby-On-The-Marsh (Finale). Kira disguises herself as a regular mortal from Australia and arrives at the Santa Monica pier just in time to rescue Sonny. Kira begins her work (Magic), and Sonny reveals his dream to open a roller disco. Inspiring Sonny brings Kira one step closer to being granted the gift of Xanadu. This infuriates sister Muses, Melpomene and Calliope, who hatch a plan to curse Kira so she falls in love with Sonny, a mortal, which is forbidden (Evil Woman). Sonny and Kira meet again in front of a rundown theater and receive a sign that things are coming together to fulfill Sonny's dream (Suddenly). Sonny meets with Danny, the owner of the theater, who is not interested in Sonny's plan until Kira enters and reminds him of someone he knew long ago (Whenever You're Away From Me). In a flashback, we learn that Kira once came to Danny disguised as the southern belle, Kitty, and inspired him to build the old theater. Melpomene and Calliope hide in the abandoned theater and await the arrival of Kira and Sonny so they can curse them and make them fall in love. Danny and Sonny run into each other at the theater, which is named Xanadu, and share their individual visions for its restoration (Dancin'). Danny agrees to give Sonny the theater if he can fix it up by the end of the day. Kira arrives, and they begin planning, providing Melpomene and Calliope with the moment they have been waiting for (Strange Magic). Left with only one hour to restore the theater, the Muses enter and help with the job (All Over The World). With the theater restored, Danny is back in show business, and Sonny's dreams are coming true. The two of them admire the Xanadu sign, while Kira receives a message via Hermes from Zeus reminding her of the rules she must live by. Realizing her feelings, Kira tries to leave, but Sonny begs her to stay (Don't Walk Away). Kira gets away and her evil sisters talk Danny into selling them the theater. Kira returns to Venice Beach to re-enter the mural, having failed in her quest to inspire Sonny and achieve Xanadu for herself. Confronted by her sisters and Sonny, the truth comes out, and she leaves, flying on Pegasus, back to Mount Olympus (Suspended in Time). Kira is brought before Zeus, Aprhodite, Thetis, and Hera to answer for what she has done. Zeus proclaims his sentence, but the others beg his mercy (Have You Never Been Mellow). Zeus pardons Kira, and Sonny arrives at Mount Olympus to profess his love. Zeus decrees that Kira shall return to Earth as a mortal to be with Sonny. He grants her the gift of Xanadu. Honoring Rick Walters

Hal Leonard has announced the loss of their esteemed friend and colleague, Rick (Richard) Walters.

Walters, a key figure at Hal Leonard for 39 years, began his journey as a keyboard editor and ascended to the role of VP of Classical & Vocal Publications. In 2011, he pioneered the Hal Leonard Vocal Competition, the industry's first all-YouTube contest for vocal students. This groundbreaking initiative earned widespread respect and propelled numerous students into successful singing careers. Rick's dedication was evident as he personally reviewed tens of thousands of videos until the competition concluded with his retirement in 2023. Even after retiring, he continued to make a difference in the music community, particularly with the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra, where he served on the board and mentored budding composition students.

His unwavering passion and commitment to preserving and presenting repertoire for students and their teachers have left an indelible mark. No vocal competition or audition happens without singers using materials Rick helped create with our editorial teams. Rick’s many iconic projects include the Singer’s Musical Theatre Anthology series, the Hal Leonard Vocal Library series, Schirmer Performance Editions series, a new edition of 28 Italian Songs & Arias of the 17^th & 18^th Centuries, and collections of music by Benjamin Britten, Samuel Barber, Stephen Sondheim, and even Mel Brooks.
